The Trials of an Indie Author: Part 1 - Promoting yourself

Hello my lovelies! As you can tell by the title of this post, I'm beginning a multi-part series by request of you wonderful people to do my best to answer some questions about the world of being an indie author. I'm by no means an expert but I'm more than happy to share the knowledge I've been accumulating and to answer any questions you may have. If you have any requests for certain topics, please don't hesitate to ask in the comments below!

Now, the first topic I'd like to address is the issue of promoting yourself. You see, it's not enough to write a fantastic book and publish it; unfortunately, your work is just beginning. Your book could be the greatest book ever written, but if you don't promote yourself, few people are likely to find it. So, how do you promote yourself? That's a hard question to answer to be perfectly honest. I'm still feeling my way around in this aspect, but I've started off pretty well.

One last thing before we get started. I self-publish but even if you sign on with an indie publisher, you'll probably have to do some promoting on your own. These all still apply :)

Step 1: Be realistic in your expectations

The first and most important piece of advice I can give you is to be realistic in your expectations with regards to your sales. Even authors signed on with one of the Big 6 authors take several books before they truly start achieving success. I know you want to release your book and instantly have it be a sensation and make tons of money, but the reality is it's extremely unlikely to happen. The best thing to do is have a great idea that brings people back for more. Keep writing and hopefully every book will be a bit more successful than the first.

Don't be discouraged if you don't sell many books right off the bat. You should be writing because you love to write and have a story to tell. If you're in this for the money, you really need to sit down and think about whether this is what you truly want to do.

Step 2: Throw yourself to the social networking wolves

I've said this before, but it bears repeating: I'm a very shy person in real life. I'm introverted and would much prefer sitting at home curled up with a good book rather than going out to parties and being social. I never ever thought I'd enjoy the world of social networking as much as I have, but it has been a wonderful experience. I've met so many wonderful people that have helped me tremendously and interacting online takes a lot of the scariness of meeting new people. Nobody can see you directly so it makes it much easier to relax and be yourself.

Facebook and Twitter are two extremely valuable tools to keep  you in touch with your readers and connect yourself to other authors. Make as many author friends as you can so you can learn as much as you can. I thought Breaking the Nexus was the best thing ever written, until I had some authors read it and pointed out areas that really needed work. No matter how amazing your book is, there's always room for improvement.

I recommend establishing yourself well in advance of your book's release so you have the best release day possible. If you've already released your books, that's awesome and you can still establish yourself. The most important thing to remember is don't start by bombarding people with your book. You wouldn't want to meet someone and immediately have them trying to sell you something, so don't make online friends and immediately start with "OMG I have this book and you totally need to go buy it because it's awesome." There are times when the first contact I receive from someone on Facebook or Twitter is a link to buy their book and I'll be honest, it annoys me.

I'm not saying, don't tell everyone about your awesome book, but really try to make friends. Talk about the everyday things and share snippets to increase interest. The more people enjoy conversing with you, the better your chances are of persuading them to want to read your work.

Step 3: Have a blog and/or website

Blogs are great for several reasons. I started doing author interviews on my blogs and it introduced me to tons of fellow authors of all different genres. I've made some great friends this way and best of all, it has been a huge help in networking. Just because I write paranormal/fantasy romance doesn't mean I should focus on authors of those genres. People have diverse tastes and opinions and you can learn so much from so many people.

A blog is also great for enticing your readers. Post snippets, character interviews, character sketches, etc to keep your interest alive. The more anticipation you can build, the better. It helps readers find out more about you because I know if I read an author I like, the first thing I do is look for a blog or website.

One other benefit to blogging is participating in Blog Hops. These are when a bunch of bloggers sign up for a themed hop and people jump around to the different blogs. Typically you have a giveaway to entice people to visit your blog and it helps you get greater visibility. Carrie Ann Ryan holds fantastic blog hops with some pretty awesome grand prizes that have been amazing for bringing traffic to my blog. I highly recommend looking into participating in one of her hops by clicking here.

Not into blogging? Then at the very least have a website to make it easier for your fans to find out about you. If I look up an author and can't find a website or blog, I'm far more likely to forget about them because I don't want to go hunting down the information or their other books.

Step 4: Hold giveaways and promotional events

Everybody loves free stuff. It doesn't matter if it's a bookmark, an ebook, a gift card, or a rubber ducky. Giveaways are a great way to bring people to your events or blogs for the chance to win a prize. If you can't afford a bunch of prizes (and believe me, it does add up quickly), have a big prize and hold games and such for entries to win that bigger prize. I met many of my lovelies through my cover reveal and blog tour giveaways. They came for the prizes but stayed because they had a blast. You don't need to spend a fortune, just get creative. You can also ask fellow authors for donations of swag or ebooks because it gives them a great chance for cross promotion.

Step 5: Be willing to give away copies of your book for review

I can't tell you how many copies of Breaking the Nexus I've given away but it's a ton. I'm striving for 50 reviews on Amazon and have given away a good portion of that as review copies. I've also emailed about 20-30 review blogs asking for review (though I've only heard back from a handful of them). No, you don't make any money on those review copies out right, but it introduces people to your work and the reviews will bring others. There are also a number of amazing people who will buy the book after they've read it because they loved it so much and want to support you.

Breaking the Nexus is the first in a trilogy so my goal has been to get as many people addicted to my trilogy as possible so that they'll be more likely to buy book 2, Waking the Phoenix, when it comes out. I'm not making much money on all those review copies now but if it translates to future sales, it's more than worth it.

One last point on reviews. I'm told Amazon.com will work harder to promote your books once you get to 50 reviews. I've also watched as my ranking jumps after a review goes live, even if I didn't sell a book. Reviews are critical so don't be stingy with those copies!

Step 6: Be patient and willing to experiment

I said at the start of this post that I'm no expert. I'm still working out the exact methods that work for me and my book and there's still a ton that you'll need to do. Promoting your book will require lots of time, effort and research on your part, but it's essential for you to be successful as a writer. You won't become famous overnight so be patient. It's hard, I know, but the pay off is worth it.

Ok my lovelies, I hope this has helped a bit. Please let me know what other topics you'd like me to discuss! My next post will be on the merits of getting an editor!

Breaking the Nexus, available NOW on Amazon!

Throughout history, myths and legends of extraordinary creatures have been told and retold. Fantastic tales of demons and banshees, gryphons and dragons, and of course, magic. Stories that every child grows to learn are nothing more than fantasy…or are they?
Beyond the world you see lies a hidden realm, the Mythrian Realm, inhabited by all of the creatures you’ve been told are mere fiction. Only one thing lies between humans and the truth: the Nexus. A magical barrier erected millennia ago to separate the two realms, it has stood the test of time. Until now.

For Mythrian Sha Phoenix, magic is nothing new. But when she stumbles upon a portal on the verge of collapse, her fate will forever change. Pulled through the portal into the Human Realm, she lands in the middle of Detective Connor Flynn’s brutal murder scene. Soon it is obvious someone is using blood magic to try to bring down the Nexus. Together, Connor and Sha must work to unravel the secrets before the barrier falls and the realms collide.

The Nexus is breaking and all hell is about to unleash…literally.

 Excerpt:

As they halted at a red light, he decided to break the silence. “Don’t you have big cities where you’re from?”
“Oh we do, but it’s so different. I’m not used to such height and all that glass. We have tall buildings, though nothing on this scale. Part of it is to allow plenty of sky space for our flying creatures.”
“You mean birds?”
“Birds, gryphons, dragon—all sorts of creatures really.”
Despite all he’d seen this morning, he just couldn’t wrap his head around that. “Gryphons and dragons…seriously?”
“Yes, I—” Sha’s words cut off, her body tensing as if to prepare for an attack. “Something’s coming,” she warned as a piercing shriek reverberated through the air.
“Do you know what that was?” He scanned the surroundings, looking for the source of the scream. It was like nothing he’d ever heard and had chilled him to the bone. It sounded neither human nor animal; whatever it was, he doubted it was friendly.
Another shriek, this one louder, longer…closer. People on the streets began running, fear stark on their faces. A black mass blocked one of the street lamps that had turned on mere minutes earlier, but he couldn’t distinguish any features. “Sha! Do you know what’s out there?” She sat frozen, her eyes closed in intense concentration.
“Mother Night, it can’t be.”
Another shriek, even closer, this time accompanied by the terrified shouts of innocent bystanders. Connor reached over and shook her shoulder in an attempt to break through to her. “Now’s not exactly the time for disbelief. What the hell is coming for us?”
Her eyes met his, outward calm masking a hint of fear. “A banshee.”
Oh, shit. So much for luck being on their side.

Allison Cosgrove Cover Reveal!!!

Hello my lovelies!! Today I have the awesome privilege of hosting the fantabulous Allison Cosgrove for her cover reveal!! SQUEEEEE! And ironically, she's today's blog tour stop so be sure to check her out :) So without further ado....

Sacrifice Of Innocence

A cult has been killing children for its rituals and only one cop knows who they are. Detective Stan Brookshire knows but his past keeps people from believing in him. Can he rise above the stigma that shrouds his past and stop a cult from taking yet another innocent child from her mother’s arms before its too late?

The man in the corner listened in the darkness, the wind whistling through the crack in the window frame, billowing his hair around him. The child in the room with him was invisible in the darkness. Even the power of the sun, let alone the light from the full moon, could not dampen the gloom hidden behind the boarded windows.

Hearing a sound, the man stiffened. It was the child; the sweet, young child.

"Very soon, my precious, very soon," Joseph whispered, his breath coming in short gasps. Excitement filled his belly; time was drawing closer for the boy.

Footsteps in the hallway caused the boy to whimper in fear, lighting the man's loins on fire. Desperately wanting the forbidden, to touch and play with the boy, he tried to force the urge back down. He wasn't allowed that pleasure, yet. The priests would come soon and the boy would have to be pure. The man's needs would have to wait. The boy would have to wait.

Dreaming of the day he would finally be able to have his way with the boy, the man fixed the delicious whimpers in his memory. The boy would no longer be able to cry and plea.

It was coming soon. So close now.

On the other side of the room, he heard the ominous creak of the door opening. Blinding light silhouetted a figure dressed in long robes.

He hurried over and retrieved his boy-child, his breath coming in gasps so ragged that he thought his lungs would cease to function.

A whimper was all that escaped the gag when the boy tried to scream. Cringing at the man's touch, he fought against the bonds, causing the man's groin to harden once more.

The man smiled. He tightened his grip upon the boy as he tried to wiggle free. The door stood open, waiting for him and the boy.

Suddenly, the door swung closed behind him, plunging the room into darkness once again.

Admit it, you're dying to read it now right?!

Interview and Review with Lia Davis + GIVEAWAY!!!!

Hello lovelies! I took time out of my furious writing to bring you another interview AND a review!

As a special treat, Lia will be giving away a copy of Forgotten Visions and a swag pack to one lucky commenter!!

A few months ago, I had the honor of winning a giveaway by the fantabulous Lia Davis, and I won her book Forgotten Visions. Let me tell you, I'm so so glad I did. But more on that after the interview :)

Interview

Thank you so much for joining me today Lia!! Let's dive right in :) When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I’m not sure really. When I was in high school I loved to write stories and even wrote a play-like story with a friend of mine. I’m not sure what happen to the scripts, but I’d love to read them today. LOL. I thought about writing screenplays, but had no clue how to do it. I guess at the time I didn’t have a true desire to learn. Than after my divorce I tried to write again, but didn’t have a true direction and put it down again.
Then about 5 years ago I started reading paranormal romance. I fell in love and discovered my true direction in writing.

That's kind of how I fell into it :) Adore paranormal romance! What has been the most difficult part about being a writer?

Discovering my voice and how to plot. I had a hard time finishing a manuscript at first. Forgotten Visions took me about a year to complete (that’s from start to submission). My muse likes to wing it and I like structure and organization. I tried outlining in detail by hand writing the storyline. The muse blew that out of the water by refusing to show up when it was time to write. Finally with my writing partner’s help, I learned to plot by doing chapter outlines. I only put the main points of the story in there and my muse seems happy with that because she’s free just let the story flow.

Finding my voice was so hard for me as well. I can only imagine how hard it must be to reconcile your muse with your innate need to plan lol. Who are your favorite authors?

Oh, there are too many to name. My biggest influences in paranormal romance are JR Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Nalini Singh. And of course my BFF and writing partner, Carrie Ann Ryan.

LOVE all of those authors! What type of books do you like to read?

I love anything with a HEA (happily ever after) and suspense. My major genres I read is historical romances (I love the different time periods) and paranormal romances (love the fantasy worlds mixed with contemporary times)

That's exactly how I am. I think we're more alike than I realized haha. What do you like to do in your free time?

Free time? What’s that? LOL. I work a full-time day job in the finance/accounting department of a vendor management software company, and I write full time. When I do make time, I like to spend it with my hubby, or read. Sometimes both. J

Wow, you work for a software company, I'm a programmer...the similarities are beginning to be a little strange LOL. Where is your favorite place to vacation?

The mountains! It doesn’t matter which ones. I love the scenery and the closeness to nature.

Mountains are so gorgeous. I like the beach and hubby likes the mountains so we try to compromise and visit both. Why did you choose to write a fantasy romance?

I love reading it and the more I read the more ideas of my own I develop. I’m not one for walking the straight line. I like to venture off the path a little. Paranormal and fantasy romance allows me to do that.

I couldn't agree more! What has been the most fun about working on Forgotten Visions and the Divinities series?

The world building and the magic. I loved creating something unique and weaving magic into a real world feel.

Your story was definitely unique :) Tell us, what exactly is a Divinity?

By definition, divinity means a divine being and a godlike character. I bring that definition into my world. The Divinities are demi-gods. They carry a divine gene, passed on from generation to generation, but only a select few are born with a divine gift and bores the Divinity birthmark.
As for the history of the gene and its origin, I can’t reveal that yet *winks*

Aww, now that's just not fair! *pouts* LOL How did you come up with the premise for Divinities series?

It kind of evolved. When I started writing, I wanted to write a vampire series (still do). I had, and still having, a hard time with coming up with a solid mythology that is both unique and my own, so I turned to Greek mythology. For some reason the Goddess Hecate stood out to me. I started developing characters and researching magick and Wicca. I used the nature based spirituality of paganism as the basis for my witches. But I didn’t want to limit my world to just witches, so I added fae, elves, pixies and other magical beings that may or may not show up in future books. And, of course, there had to be something special about the main characters of the series. So I gave them god-like powers and called them the Divinities.

Don't you just love how an idea can evolve and take you in the complete opposite direction from where you'd intended? Can you tell me more about the world in which this book is set?

The setting in Forgotten Visions is a small town named Maxville, Florida. The time frame is contemporary. I bring in as much real-life aspects as I can to world. That way it is easier for readers to relate to the story and the characters.

I always love when authors blend contemporary settings with their paranormal worlds. It ameks it so much easier to immerse yourself I think. Do you have any favorite characters from Forgotten Visions or any planned Divinities books?

I don’t like to play favorites among my characters, but Khloe and Zach had always come to me easier than the others. I think it’s their carefree nature and sarcasm.

It's ok to sometimes play favorites ;) Give us a little insight into your latest book, Death’s Storm. Please? J

Death’s Storm is Khloe’s story. Here’s the blurb.
Technical genius and demi-goddess--aka Divinity--Khloe Bradenton relies on no one for help, and she definitely doesn’t need comfort from anyone other than her twin. After her parents died by the demons’ hands over two years ago, she has graciously stepped up to her place in the war between demons and witches. When a creature far more dangerous than the ones responsible for killing her parents claims he is her guardian, she is torn between her desires for the dark predator and the painful loss she has endured at the hands of her enemies.
One of the last death demons still in existence, Jagger has pledged his life to the Goddess Hecate. Charged with the guardianship over the Divinities, he is never to approach them, but to aid them from a distance. When the firestorm, Khloe, sacrifices herself to save her twin and best friend and becomes the prey, he has no choice but to reveal himself to her. He is taken by surprise when the need to claim her as his own emerges. A desire he has never felt before could be more dangerous than the demons out to destroy them.

Now Available at Amazon | B&N | ARe | Kobo

Yay blurb! I confess, I've already bought Death's Storm, and lovelies you must go get it! I absolutely love your writing style! How many books are you planning for the series and when can we expect the next one?

Aww. Thanks! I have 5 books planned for The Divinities series. Zach and Lydia is next. Their book is titled The Dark Divine. Right now I’m targeting a June 2013 release, because I’m working on another series.

I can't wait for your next book!! We are almost out of time, but can you tell us what's next for you?

I working on a shifter series named Ashwood Falls. The prequel, Winter Eve, will release next month and book 1, A Tiger’s Claim is targeted for April 2013. I’m so excited about this series. There are 8 (9 including the prequel) books planned for this series, so I’ll be busy for a while. LOL.
Here’s the link for more information on Ashwood Falls: http://www.authorliadavis.com/ashwood-falls/

SQUEEEE!! Love shifters! Anything else you want your readers to know?

Just that I love each and everyone them and Thanks so much for their support!

I'm so glad you could join me today Lia! Alright, lovelies...ready for the review?

Review of Forgotten Visions

About the book:
Publisher: Soulmate Publishing
Price: $4.99
Length: 208 pages

Kalissa Bradenton isn’t your average coffee shop owner. Born to an elite witch bloodline with a rare genetic mutation, she’s a Divinity on a mission. The death of her parents sends her away from her Maxville, Florida, home and into an ancient war between witches and demons. When childhood friend Ayden Daniels comes to her aid after an almost fatal accident, visions of a past she doesn’t remember sparks an old flame and new desires. With the past slowly becoming clearer, she eagerly sets her sights on mending Ayden’s heart and gaining his trust–until a ghost from her past returns to claim her as his demonic mate.

Ayden, the new Sheriff of Maxville and grandson of the oldest living Divinity, is investigating a series of Divinity killings. When he comes face-to-face with the one woman he hopes to have little to no contact with, old pain rises, quickly followed by anger and resentment. Through his rare power of adaptability, he learns actions from the past may not be what they seem. Hope fills his broken heart and determination pushes him to do whatever it takes to win Kalissa’s heart once more before he loses her forever.

Together they must find the strength to mend their tormented souls, while fighting an evil out to destroy the world.

What I liked:

This was a fresh, fun paranormal romance. I love Greek mythology so I was naturally drawn to a contemporary paranormal romance centering around it. Who doesn't want the chance to have magic? I adored the characters of Kalissa and Ayden and really felt the connection between them. I'm not kidding when I say I kinda want Ayden for myself :) Lia did a great job of packing a lot of mystery into the pages and it's a great set up for the Divitinies series. This was a unique premise and at the end I was dying for the next book

What I didn't like:

This suffers from the same issue of so many other first novels of a series. There were a bunch of characters introduced all at once, and at times it could get overwhelming. It's hard because you have to walk a fine line between introducing enough characters to set up your future books, but not bogging down the central love story. I wanted more of Kalissa and Ayden.

Overall Verdict: 4/5 Blue Duckies!

I really did love this book, but so many names got confusing and sometimes I had to go back and forth refreshing my memory of the characters. This is a problem I often see with the first novel of a series, so it's understandable. The core story was still wonderful and unique and I can't wait to read more from Lia!
