There are three rules in the small town of Leeds Point, New Jersey:

Never go into the Pineys.
And, more than anything, never speak of the Jersey Devil.

Serenity Cantwell knows all too well the Jersey devil exists. The recurring nightmares of his glowing green eyes make their way into her dreams, causing her to relive her encounter with the beast every single night. But as people she knows start to disappear, and end up dead, in the middle of the Pine Barrens, she pushes away her fear of the forest in search of answers.
What she finds will change her life forever. Secrets will be revealed, a curse will be set in motion, and friendships will be tested. But most of all, love could prove to be deadly.

After a near fatal riding accident, Bebe Barkley is banned from riding and sent off to boarding school. There, she meets her roommate and fellow equestrian rider, Finn Foxley. The girls devise a scheme to get themselves kicked out of boarding school in order to return to the world that they love. Once back on the circuit, former friends become deadly rivals.

Bebe's handsome trainer, Billy O'Reilly, gives her seven rules to follow in order to successfully compete. Through a series of tragic events, both girls are forced to abandon their dreams of Olympic gold. Bebe ventures down a dark road of self-destruction as she breaks every rule Billy taught her, only to be forced to relearn them in order to reclaim her life. Rules for Riders is a tale of lost dreams and the struggle to create new ones.

KING
CHAPTER 1

I can still remember the first time I saw him...

He’s seventeen hands high, a dark bay, almost black, a white star on his forehead, and four white socks on his hind legs. I’m fifteen years old when I spy King bucking and rearing and giving the grooms a terrible time. I think he’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

I point straight at him, “I want that horse.”

My father (otherwise known as the Colonel) rolls his eyes. “No, he’s wild. You just want him because he’s difficult like you.”

We’re at our neighbors, the O’Rileys, on a crisp Sunday morning. Jim O’Riley owns Starlight stables and is one of the best horse trainers in Connecticut. Jim winks at me. “For God’s sake, Colonel, everyone knows you made a ton of money in the stock market. Let her have the damn horse.”

“I said no,” shrieks the Colonel, remaining unconvinced. “Besides, who’ll train her?”

“I will,” Billy O’Riley, Jim’s oldest son, steps forward. His clear green eyes stare straight at King. “He’s a warm blood, sir, from Holland. We just bought him.”

The Colonel growls at Billy. “Listen son, I don’t care if he’s from friggin’ Japan! For God’s sake you’re only a couple of years older than my daughter.”

We all stand there watching, while his face turns bright red with rage. There’s no way in hell he's going to let me have this horse now. That would be too perfect. Instead, he shocks the pants off of me!

“Fine, but if you break your neck, don’t blame me.”

First thing the next morning I race over to the O’Rileys. By the time I reach the stables, I’m out of breath. Billy’s busy brushing down his horse, Stargazer. I walk over to King and stroke his mane. Then I pull a sugar cube out of my pocket. “Hey, boy.”

Billy looks up. “That’s funny, he doesn’t usually take to people so quickly. So let me guess, you want to take a ride?”

God, I’ve been riding since I was six! Okay, I admit it— Billy’s a hottie. I’ve had a crush on him forever. But it makes me crazy the way he still treats me like a little kid. He leans closer and places his hands firmly on his hips.

“Bebe, if I’m going to train you, there are rules for riders. The first one’s commitment. Without it, none of the other rules exist. If I agree to train you, you’ve got to give me 100 percent.”

I stare right back at him, giving him my best killer smile. “I’m all yours!”

For the next few weeks, he insists I do nothing but flat work. He hardly lets me ride across the yard without making sure I am doing it properly. Unlike the Colonel, Billy brings out the best in me and plays down the worst. Whatever I lack, he teaches me with infinite slowness; guiding King and I so we both gain confidence.

“That’s right. Keep your back straight, hold your head up, shoulders back.”

I learn from Billy that difficult horses become easy once you know how to handle them. With Billy’s training, I’m right on course. The Colonel’s threats don’t scare me. Instead, they fuel me, making me even more determined to succeed.

A few days later, I get to the stables early for some quiet time with King. Billy sneaks up behind me. I can feel his breath against my neck.

When I turn around, he has an amused look on his face. “So, do you finally want to take a ride? Isn’t that what you’ve been dying to do—jump every fence this side of Connecticut?”

I have this wild urge to hug him. Instead, I saddle up King. “C’mon, boy.”

King and I take off.

“Tell me what you’ve learned when you get back!” Billy shouts.

Resolutions

As we get closer to the end of the year, I started naturally thinking of the New Year's Resolutions.

Let's face it, most people who make them don't actually keep them. Every year you make a resolution, you may try to keep it (or you may have forgotten it in a drunken haze), but after a few weeks you move on. Gyms make me laugh so hard at the beginning of the year because they are PACKED with hopefuls. Take a look around March? It's back to only the die hards.

Anyway, since my release day was an epic one (12/13/14 for you Americans), I'm going to make my resolution now. Consecutive days won't happen again for a long time and I'm a little OCD so I've decided it's fitting.

Starting new things TERRIFIES me. It doesn't matter if it's writing a new book, a new coding project, a new pretty, whatever. I can't explain the overwhelming anxiety that hits me and makes me run. So here's my resolution: When I'm terrified to start something new, I'm going to force myself to push through it. Even if I literally write gibberish, if I want to start a book, I'm going to start it.

It's a small thing, but it's not going to be easy. The way I figure it though, I've already come much farther than I ever thought I would. I wake up in the morning able to just role out of pain without feeling like I'm 80. I don't have to spend an hour working my hands until I can comfortably move them enough to really get down to business. I'm no longer in constant pain and afraid nobody will believe me.

I'm no longer trapped by my body and the ravages of my anxieties. I still have them, don't get me wrong. I do ache still, especially at night when it's getting time to take my Celebrex. I still get scared in groups of people, but I'm pushing past it instead of cowering.

So there you go. My resolution is a simple yet difficult one: Start something WHEN I want to. Don't make excuses, don't say I can do it tomorrow, don't let fear hold this one last major part of me.

You've heard mine, what's going to be your resolution?

About Barbara Devlin and The Brethren

ABOUT-THE-BRETHREN3Barbara Devlin was born a storyteller. A Texan, through and through, Barbara hasn’t been without a book in her possession since she was in kindergarten. She wrote her first short story, a really cheesy murder-mystery, in high school, but it was a Christmas gift, a lovely little diary with a bronze lock, given to her in the fifth grade that truly inspired her love for writing.
After completing part of her undergraduate studies at the University of London, Barbara returned home and began a career in banking. But the late 80’s weren’t too promising for the financial industry, and every bank that hired Barbara soon folded. So she searched for a stable occupation, and the local police department offered the answer to her prayers.
Initially, Barbara wasn’t too sure about her new chosen career in law enforcement, but she soon came to love being a police officer. However, on an uncharacteristically cold and icy day in December 1998, Barbara was struck by a car and pinned against a guardrail while working an accident on a major highway. Permanently disabled, she retired from the police department and devoted her time and energy to physical therapy.
Once Barbara got back on her feet, she focused on a new career in academia. She earned an MA in English, continued on a course of study for a Doctorate in Literature and Rhetoric, started writing historical fiction in her spare time, and completed five full-length novels featuring her fictional knighthood, the Brethren of the Coast.  Book six is currently in the works.knife-and-keys

Eve Langlais' Polar Bared Release Day Blitz

What’s a bear to do when a human has a polar-izing effect? Gene only has one thing on his mind, vengeance, until Vicky crashes into his life. When Vicky accidentally slides into the side of a polar bear, she doesn’t expect to fall in love. Eaten yes, perhaps used as a chew toy, but become the object of a bear’s affection and lust? Crazy! Almost as crazy as the fact the polar bear turns out to be a man. A sexy man. A man who growls, and roars and does everything he can to chase her away. Only to come back. Poor Gene. After the pain and betrayal he suffered in the war all he wants is vengeance against the brothers who left him behind. But he’s confused when instead of wanting to punish him for his evil acts, they offer him forgiveness. As if that weren’t annoying enough, the cutest geek he ever met—with caramel kissed skin covering a lush, rounded figure and wearing the sexiest dark rimmed glasses—won’t leave him alone. Or more like, he can’t seem to stop following her.

And it isn’t just because someone is out to hurt her.

He wants her. But does he want her more than vengeance?

 Excerpt:

With a growl, he shifted shapes and stood, hands on his hips, glaring down at her.
“What am I going to do with you?” he muttered aloud.
She would, of course, take that moment to flutter her eyes open, blink, take in his appearance, and then, instead of screaming as expected, replied, in a slurred voice, “Wow. Can I suggest you do me?”
Well, that was unexpected. He surely misunderstood. “What the fuck did you say?”
She squinted, her glasses lost or tucked away. “You are naked.”
“Very.”
“Why?”
“Why what?”
“Why are you naked? It’s cold out here.” As if to make that point clear, she shivered. “So cold.”
He held in yet another sigh. “You need to get somewhere warm before you die.”
“You mean I’m not dead yet?”
“Emphasis on the yet,” he grumbled.
“Oh. I guess I’m close then. That would explain why I’m hallucinating a giant naked man is talking to me.”
She thought him a hallucination? That might actually work in his favor.
“This is all a dream.”
A sigh escaped her. “Figures. I never have good ones. Why can’t I have one where I’m on a warm beach? With you naked still of course.” She smiled and giggled.
Gene frowned. Someone was feeling the effects of being out in the cold for too long. It happened. Something about the air, and other mumbo jumbo shit he didn’t pay much attention to. As a shifter he didn’t suffer from normal human frailties.
But she apparently did.
“Do you have a name?” he asked as he bent down to pick her up.
“Victoria, but people usually call me Vicky. Or Trippy. I’m a little clumsy,” she said in an almost whisper, as if confiding in him.
Clumsy was understating it from what he’d seen so far. With her in his arms, he faced the dilemma of how to climb the hill. He solved it the same way he had in the desert with one of his fallen mates. “I’m going to put you on my back. I need you to hold tight around my neck and wrap your legs around my waist.”
“You want me to piggyback you?”
“Yes,” he said, shifting her around his torso.
She clung to him, her chin resting on his shoulder, her limbs snug around him. It warmed him more than it should have.
“Don’t let go,’ he warned as he began to climb.
“I won’t. I can do anything in a dream,” she announced. “I can pretend I’m skinny and beautiful. I can meet strange naked men. I can even kiss them.”
And she did. She planted a sloppy smooch on his neck, and he almost lost his footing.
“What the hell was that for?” he barked.
“A thank you?” she said in a meek voice.
“You don’t need to thank me. This is a dream, remember?” He practically growled the words at her but couldn’t erase the sizzling heat of her embrace.

~ A New York Times & USA Today Bestseller
~ #1 Amazon Paranormal Romance Bestselling Author
~ Top 10 AllRomance Bestselling Author 2013

Hello, my name is Eve. I’m a stay at home mom who writes full time in between juggling my three kids, hubby, and housework, I write really raunchy stuff–usually with werewolves lol.
I am a bestselling Amazon author, ranking often in their top 100 romance authors. But I’m not just popular with Kindle readers. I was one of the top ten selling authors on AllRomance for 2013 and have had numerous of my books hit the top 20 books over all on Barnes & Nobles as well.
I am the first person to admit I am totally boring and lead a mundane life. Seriously. My idea of fun is shopping at our local Walmart lol. I like to play video games, cook, and read. My inspiration, hmm, I guess you could say hubby as he is a total alpha male which means I often want to club him over head with a frying pan. But, despite his ornery, ‘I-am-man’ nature, I love him dearly.
I’m writing romance, my way. I do have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. I like strong alpha males, naked chests and werewolves. Lots of werewolves. In fact, you’ll notice most of my multi partner stories revolve around great, big, overprotective Lycans who just want to please their woman. I am also extremely partial to aliens, you know the kind who abduct their woman and then drive them insane…with pleasure of course.
My heroines, they kind of run the gamut. I have some that are shy and soft spoken, others that will kick a man in the balls and laugh. Many of them are chubby, because in my world, girls with curves ROCK! Oh and some of my heroines are a teeny tiny bit evil, but in their defense, they need love too.
Some of my work does push boundaries and cross lines. Good and evil aren’t always clear in my tales, and in some cases, I’ve stomped on well known religious ideologies. Have I mentioned my imagination is a tad bit warped?
I tend to have a lot of sexual tension in my tales because I think all torrid love affairs start with a tingle in our tummies. And when my characters do finally give in to the needs of their flesh? Well, let’s just say, you shouldn’t be reading my stuff at work. The door is wide open, explicit and hot. Really, really hot.
I love to write, and while I don’t always know what my mind is going to come up with next, I can promise it will be fun, probably humorous and most of all romantic, because I love a happily ever after.

Striking like lightning, he fisted her hair and raised her head. She grimaced for a moment, the sharp tingle of pain making its point before easing to a warm discomfort. If he’d meant to truly hurt her, she knew he had the power. As it was, the sting of pulled hair just heightened the awe she felt for his strength, and for her own ability to get under his skin. She gradually curled her mouth into a full smile and blew him a cheeky little kiss.
"You don’t just want me to suck it, do you, Lukey? You want to fuck my pretty mouth. Deep.
Don’t you?"
Miranda met his gaze and cocked one eyebrow. She knew nobody ever went close to defying him, let alone taunting him so blatantly.
The masculine spice of his cock filled her senses and at that moment there was nothing she wanted more than to wrap her lips around the thickness of his hard shaft. To tease at the head of him, send shocks of pleasure down the length of him.
